Sphere Ensemble Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary Season with Architecture, Exploring the Relationship Between Music and the Spaces We Inhabit

Featuring works by Caroline Shaw, Claude Debussy, Cream, Wynton Marsalis, and more, Sphere’s November concerts explore how music shapes our experience of the world, alongside community outreach that makes live music more accessible to all.

DENVER, CO — As Sphere Ensemble celebrates its 15th anniversary season, the Denver-based string ensemble invites audiences to explore the connections between music, architecture, and the spaces we inhabit with Architecture, a concert that asks how the things we create shape the way we experience the world.
​
Taking place November 6 at Miller Center at Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver and November 8 at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Boulder, Architecture brings together works by Caroline Shaw, Claude Debussy, Cream, Wynton Marsalis, and more. Spanning musical styles and traditions, the program explores the many ways sound can construct a sense of place, transform a space, and change the way we listen.

What do music and architecture have in common? Both are built from individual elements, shaped by time and space, and experienced in ways that can move us physically and emotionally. Is music a kind of architecture? Can something we cannot see reshape the spaces around us—or even change how we experience the world in our own bodies?
​
Like a building, music takes shape through the relationships between its parts. Rhythm, harmony, texture, and silence create structures that listeners move through, inhabit, and interpret in their own ways. Yet music also reaches beyond structure. It can alter our sense of time, stir memories, shift our emotions, and create a shared experience among listeners.
​
As Sphere marks 15 years of bringing people together through music, Architecture offers an opportunity to consider how art shapes our relationship with the world around us. Just as architecture influences how we move through and understand our surroundings, music creates spaces of its own—shaping how we feel, how we listen, and how we connect with one another.

Bringing Music Beyond the Concert Hall
Sphere’s commitment to connection extends beyond traditional concert venues through Orbit: Sphere in the Community, a program that brings free live performances directly to local nonprofit organizations serving marginalized and vulnerable communities. Through Orbit, Sphere shares repertoire from its concert series while inviting dialogue about the music and its connections to participants’ lived experiences. The program aims to create moments of joy, reflection, belonging, and shared humanity while building lasting relationships with community partners.

As part of its Architecture program, Sphere will also present Sensory Friendly Saturday, a free performance on November 7, 2026, at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library in Denver. Designed for people of all ages with autism, developmental disabilities, sensory processing differences, and physical disabilities, the event welcomes families and caregivers into a concert environment where audiences can engage with music in ways that work for them.
​
Traditional concert settings can create barriers for people who move, vocalize, stim, or participate in other ways while listening. Sensory Friendly Saturday intentionally welcomes these forms of expression, offering flexible seating and space to move around in a warm, judgment-free environment. The performance features Sphere’s 14 musicians and music from Architecture, exploring themes of the built world, nature, and musical structure.

By creating opportunities to experience live music in different settings and in different ways, Sphere continues to challenge expectations about where concerts happen, who they are for, and how audiences can participate. Both Orbit and Sensory Friendly Saturday reflect the ensemble’s belief that music can foster connection and belonging when people are welcomed as they are.

Through Architecture, Sphere invites audiences to hear familiar environments differently and consider the ways human creativity shapes both our physical surroundings and our inner lives. Discover architecture anew, and experience what humanity has built through a different lens.
